Find Meter
Easy mode handles SDR tuning and protocol detection automatically. Select the dongle and METERTRACE starts listening.
Automatic water-meter listener
No frequency, sample-rate, gain, modulation, or decoder selection required.
NOT CONNECTED
1
Select dongle
Choose your RTL-SDR in the browser USB picker.
2
Listen
METERTRACE chooses the receive profile and listens for validated frames.
3
Detect protocol
Protocol appears automatically when a checksum-valid packet is decoded.
Automatic profiles: Itron / Neptune, Badger ORION, TI CC13xx-style 50K FSK framing, then passive utility-band survey.
ReadySelect the RTL-SDR. METERTRACE will begin listening immediately after the browser grants access.

1 · Identify the physical meter
Identification suggestionEnter a manufacturer or RF module to see likely protocol/frequency hints. These are hypotheses until RF evidence confirms them.
2 · Discover meter broadcasts
Browser Direct scans common utility-meter regions without a Python collector.

No candidates yet. Start discovery or load a simulation from Project.
3 · Identify my meter
Compare candidate readings before and after a controlled amount of water use.
EVIDENCE TEST
Start a guided evidence test after candidates have repeated packets. METERTRACE records a baseline observation window, then compares only packets received after the controlled-use step begins.
Controlled-use intervalBaseline recorded. Run the controlled amount of water, then wait for fresh packets.

Evidence principle
A decoded number is not automatically gallons. METERTRACE stores the raw value and the conversion separately so calibration can be revised later without destroying the original evidence.
Derived from immutable observations
History
Inspect cumulative readings and interval consumption. Raw decoder values remain preserved even when the calibration changes.

Advanced · passive evidence
Evidence
Capture raw IQ around a signal and inspect decoder evidence without transmitting or interacting with the meter.
IQ capture
No capture runningIQ data stays in the browser and downloads locally when capture stops.
Unknown meter path
If decoding fails, preserve frequency, timing, signal strength, raw decoder output, and IQ evidence for legitimate protocol investigation. METERTRACE v2.8.4 remains passive receive-only and does not attempt active interaction or credential recovery.
v2.8.4 browser RF toolingSpectrum snapshots, waterfall history, packet inspection, raw IQ capture, and preserved decoder evidence are available. Automated unknown-meter evidence ZIP packaging remains a later milestone.
Latest raw evidence
No raw decoder evidence loaded.
Local-first
Project
A project represents one monitored meter. Meter metadata, conversion, observations, RF settings, and notes are stored locally in this browser unless you explicitly export them.
Browser Direct runtime
Default in v2.8.4. RTL-SDR access, IQ processing, analysis, simulation, replay, and local storage run in the browser. Python is not required.
NO PYTHON
Checking browser capabilities…WebUSB requires a compatible browser and secure context for live hardware. Replay and simulation work without WebUSB.
Project profile
Project import / export
Data replay
Load JSON or CSV observations and use the monitor without RF processing.
Simulation / sample data
Simulation is always labeled and never presented as live RF evidence.
SIMULATION
Privacy
Meter IDs and water-use history can reveal occupancy patterns. METERTRACE defaults to local storage, has no cloud account requirement, and does not upload meter data. Neighboring broadcasts may be visible during discovery; retain only data needed for meters you are authorized to monitor.
