Scope
VERNIER is a record-keeping tool for shop and lab calibration tracking. It is not an ISO 17025 quality management system, and the records it produces are not accredited calibration certificates. Use an accredited laboratory (A2LA, NVLAP, or equivalent) for binding metrology work.

Note on Traceability
VERNIER stores the certificate number, date, expiry, and uncertainty you enter for each standard. It does not verify the standard's traceability chain back to NIST or any other authority. Keep the certificate documents on file separately.

Decision Rule

Guard-banded mode adds a Conditional zone within g times U of each tolerance limit.
ILAC G8 default is 1.0 (subtract 1*U from each side).
Used to recommend k from effective DoF in the uncertainty editor.

Install as App (PWA)

VERNIER works fully from a local file. When served over HTTP or HTTPS, modern browsers can also install it as an app with its own window, icon, and offline cache. The standalone HTML file remains the source of truth either way.

Data

All data is stored in your browser's localStorage. Export a JSON backup regularly. There is no server and no telemetry. Photos are stored as base64 in the same logbook; large photo libraries can fill the localStorage quota (typically 5 MB).

About VERNIER

VERNIER is Field Instrument 049, a calibration logbook for the shop, lab, or field. Built single-file HTML, no build step, no external dependencies beyond Google Fonts. Named for Pierre Vernier's auxiliary scale, the mechanism that resolves a calibrated measurement to its tolerance.

Honest Limits
VERNIER is a record-keeping tool. It does not perform measurements, validate standards, enforce procedural controls, or chain back to NIST. Pass/fail can be evaluated by simple in-tolerance testing or by an ILAC G8 guard-banded decision rule with a configurable multiplier, but VERNIER does not enforce procurement of an accredited calibration. The Welch-Satterthwaite rollup recommends a coverage factor from effective degrees of freedom, but the contributor list and DoF values are user-supplied; VERNIER does not derive Type A uncertainty from raw observation series. For binding metrology work, use an accredited calibration laboratory (A2LA, NVLAP, or equivalent).
